Understanding Burlesque
Burlsque Royalty Tempest Rose answers some of the most frequently asked questions about the art of burlesque.
What is burlesque?
Burlesque is more than just a performance; it’s a live art form that allows you to express yourself in bold, unapologetic ways. In burlesque we hold up a mirror to society’s perceptions of sensuality, sexuality, gender and especially femininity and say to the audience: “what in the name of rhinestoned stillettos is going on here?!” It is a celebration and a rebellion. Combining dance, acting, comedy, clowning and exaggerated visual presentation, burlesque is all about confidence, creativity, and sass. It’s a celebration of sensuality, wit, and feminine self-expression, designed to make you feel empowered and ready to shine.

What does burlesque mean?
The word “burlesque” comes from the Italian burla, meaning “to joke” or “mock”. Burlesque takes something serious and flips it on its head, injecting a playful spirit of fun and extravagance. In modern times, it’s all about turning up the glamour and sensuality, while never taking yourself too seriously!
What is the difference between burlesque and cabaret?
Burlesque lives in the family of cabaret which traditionally takes place in a small, intimate setting, such as a nightclub or theatre, and is characterised by its lively atmosphere and audience interaction. Burlesque acts are a specialist form of cabaret act known for their glamorous and often provocative performances, which can include costumes, satire, striptease, props, and special effects.
